I'm on a Mac OSX running Mountain Lion. I was able to run 1.6 okay, but when I go to place blocks it deletes them instead. I've had this problem before the official release as well, but only on the newer versions when horses were involved.
LWJGL (which Minecraft uses and recently updated on your machine) no longer interprets Control-click as right-click on Macs. Vote up the issue on Minecraft's bug tracker so Mojang gets a proper headcount on affected users: https://mojang.atlas...browse/MC-13695

In the meantime, you'll have to assign "use item" to some other key (or use a two-button mouse), unfortunately.
