try the allocating more ram it worked for me, if thats not it then its not the launcher its the new version thats causing fps drops try deleting all of the stuff on your cpu affiliated with the older launcher and if you play multiplayer more often then singleplayer get rid of uneeded worlds

My laptop was on a Windows 7 32 bit but then I told my dad to go to a programmer to make it on Windows 7 64 bit and after 3 days of waiting I got my laptop and started downloading the Minecraft launcher then I signed in,clicked edit profile and use version all the stable versions were choosable and I downloaded 1.7.4 then I realized that all the mods are on 1.6.4 so went into the launcher edit profile,use version and I was shocked that I can only choose 1.6.4 it's so frustrating.

"Only choose" 1.6.4? Was 1.7.4 greyed out, or was it not there?

If you have IE set to use a nonexistant DNS/proxy then Minecraft would be blocked from internet access as well most likely.
I just downloaded the new launcher on a new computer, and I am used to the old launcher. Right now I'm as confused as an old grandma using a computer for the first time! It's not letting me log in, and the play button is grayed out. To be honest I really don't like the new launcher. Is there anyway I can download the old one?

nope, im having problems as well. you can only play 1.5.2 on the old launcher, but did you make a new profile? or you can just click development console see what it says
I am having problems when i am downgrading to the ALPHA and BETA versions, some of the old sounds dont work on it, most of them do but as far as i know the old door sound and the explosion sound does not work, does anyone know how to fix this??
Old versions are no longer supported. You may have luck when you delete the assets folder, but as far as I know that'll remove all sounds and they won't redownload if you're running the older versions. Take heed to the warning when you selected these old versions.
how do i go to an older .minecraft folder? i usually play in 1.7.2 but theres a mod that is only available for 1.6.4 right now, so im trying to install it but i can't get to the 1.6.4 folder
new to all of this, and I can't figure out how to open saved worlds... I can see that I have saved worlds, and I can see them in the .minecraft/saves folder, but I can't click on them to make the "play selected world" button stop being grayed out... also have a problem with not being able to scroll down menu pages, which may be interesting later... probably a user error, but an explanation would be most welcome. using most recent launcher, with bitdefender antiviral (was McAfee, then changed, problem didn't go away), brand new laptop running Windows 8...
I'd really like to be able to continue in a world...

Curse PremiumI am running the launcher on Mac and it's really annoying when Minecraft doesn't fully quit when you click "Close after launcher opes..."
