On my main world (not in other worlds) i cant break blocks without there respected tools. e.g. i cant break dirt with anything but a shovel or wood without an axe, i also cant break blocks like hay at all. I have re installed MC didn't work, i have played snapshots and currently on 1.6 pre release and am in survival mode.
I wasn't. I could break all the other blocks but only with their respected tools. In adventure mode it doesn't allow any block breaking to occur
In adventure mode you can only break blocks whilst holding the respective tools. ie. Holding a pickaxe allows you to break stone but you can't break wood or dirt with it, etc...
You are very clearly in Adventure mode. Use "/gamemode 0" (without quotations) to change back into survival mode.

Retired StaffPress Esc and click Open to LAN, then make sure Cheats is ON. Then type this in the chat: , and Save and Quit the world. (to turn off LAN)
Then rejoin your world.
