My son is completely addicted to MineCraft and owns the Xbox 360 version, iPod version and just yesterday invested in the version for Windows. The last 24 hours have been utterly fruitless in getting this game to run anywhere.
We have installed it on his older Dell Dimension 2400 and did the majority of the troubleshooting there but before we decided it was his hardware, we installed it on my Lenovo laptop and found the same issue. We followed the same steps on my laptop and then tried on his mother's brand new Lenovo (Win 8) laptop and it continues to complain that the video card drivers are bad.
Something smells in Denmark.
I confirmed his Dimension 2400 has an Intel 82845G graphics adapter which supports OpenGL and that is confirmed from the intel website. We have installed both drivers from Dell's and Intel's websites with no luck.
We have backed off on the hardware acceleration (disabling Direct3D) with no luck.
We have attempted to a batch file launch using the Java command line with no luck.
We have re-installed, rolled back and confirmed drivers are what they should be and current with no luck.
We have run it in XP compatibility mode, as administrator and using every other tip we could find but it simply will not run as the java client or in the web browser.
While his PC is older and we may need to get him a new video card to play this game, it is beyond ridiculous that we can't get it to run on ANY of the three PC's using the standard fixes.
We welcome your suggestions.
Bad video card drivers!
-----------------------
Minecraft was unable to start because it failed to find an accelerated OpenGL mode.
This can usually be fixed by updating the video card drivers.
