I tried out the new beta launcher and horses, loved it, but one day it wouldn't start. Attempts at re-downloading the launcher and minecraft it's self have been in vain, and every time now I'm met with the error:
"Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine. Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit."
I'm running on a windows XP with 2GB of ram and a nvidea video card. Java and drivers have been purged and re-installed (this didn't cause the issue mind you, I did this afterwards on a separate issue) and normal minecraft still works fine.
Not recently, but I have done this previously. (Twice)
I am not very sure what would be the issue then. The launcher had recently updated to version 0.9.5, it may have introduced something that may break. What version of the launcher were you on when it did work?
Progress, the launcher is up and running. THEN I got this!
Client> Error occurred during initialization of VM
Client> Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Game ended with bad state (exit code 1)
Deleting C:\Documents and Settings\MyRLname\Application Data\.minecraft\versions\13w25b\13w25b-natives-42889613904875
And I tried what you suggested earlier
Client> Invalid maximum heap size: -Xmx512MB
Client> The specified size exceeds the maximum representable size.
Game ended with bad state (exit code 1)
Deleting C:\Documents and Settings\IMASPIAH\Application Data\.minecraft\versions\13w25b\13w25b-natives-43036107643529
EDIT: I figured out how to change versions, and have determined it's definitely the launcher having issues, as I tried to play on the current stable 1.5.2 that has worked fine for me, and got the exact same error.

Please also try the Linux version.
...and since It's my first time I don't want to potentially break this one.
As for working, I forget the version, but it was one of the very early ones. Horses, coal and lapis were in, no new sounds.

Retired StaffThe Linux launcher is a raw .jar app, you should be able to run it regardless of operating system.

Retired StaffPlease see if any other processes are taking alot of RAM/resources, and terminating them when running the game.
Still get the exact same error, tried xms, xmx, 800mb, 800MB, 1G, 1g all interchangeably and got the same errors as above
