I have some old maps... the first ones I ever made back in Feb 2011 that I no longer can open. Someone mentioned once a two step process of reverting back to older versions of MC... but I'm not sure how that is done. Can anyone provide some directions? I did save... at least I think I saved, an entire .minecraft folder from back then. So the saves are intact. What else do I need to do?
You need a copy of mcnostalgia (...or perhaps not based upon googling)
But whatever, you need to downgrade your minecraft to version 1.1 and open your world. This should update your world to McRegion format. Current versions of Minecraft should be able to open the McRegion format and update your world to Anvil format.
If you know when the worlds were last used you can determine the version they were last used in. It might be a good idea to add at least one or more increments. For example February 2011 was around Beta 1.2 -1.3 If that is your case then I would suggest to you try upgrading to beta 1.8 and testing before upgrading to 1.1. Test and make a backup for each increment if it is stable before trying to move on to the next increment. If a conversion fails, try upgrading to an earlier version instead.
Thanks gerbil and rodabon. I still had the 1.1 jar in my bin folder... and on a hunch I renamed it minecraft.jar and popped those old saves from Feb 2011 into the save folder. They needed to be converted... and all worked in 1.1, then easily converted to the current version.
Wow... I hadn't been back in some of those worlds for almost 2 years... back before I knew how to make swords or torches because I wanted to see where I could get on my own... where I sweated out the nights in the dark... small caves or forts... and I never drifted far from home base. I finally decided I wanted to make an outpost on a nearby cliff. I was always being ambushed by creepers... and had many a mad dash from my spawn point back up the cliffs in the dark to salvage my stuff.
Thanks!

Good Luck!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
