Hello. So, I was intending to transfer a world save from one computer in my home into another, my laptop (in order to work on the world elsewhere). I have already done this once before from my laptop to the computer I'm attempting to transfer it from once again. I copied the world save into a portable hard drive and copied that into the 'saves' folder found in the '.minecraft' folder on my laptop. Everything in that folder from when I just recently saved it today on the desktop computer is still there. The level.dat, the level.dat_old, the level.dat_mcr and session.lock are in the save world folder I transferred to the laptop. From what I know about the game, there should be no reason this is occurring, especially after I had a successful transfer of the world save from my laptop to the desktop before. However, when I open the client on my laptop, every world shows up on the world list except the one I transferred. I've tried moving the world save folder onto my desktop and then back into the 'saves' folder and I've tried cutting and pasting it elsewhere before cutting and pasting it back. I've restarted Minecraft and nadda. The only difference of that world save from the rest is a ##MCEDIT.TEMP## folder from when I edited the world through MCEdit. I'm wondering if that has something to do with it? I just wanted to ask if anyone has had the same issue and has been able to solve it before I go mucking around in folders which I have no idea as to their intended function. I am running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium and with the Java SE 1.7.0_21 64 bit version on my laptop and I believe on the other computer (Again, the transfer from my laptop to the desktop originally was successful). Any suggestions?
Just as a point of information, are you using the 'old' launcher or the new launcherDev ?
And: You see worldX, and worldY in MC, but you see worldX, worldY and worldZ on the disk?
And: you didn't grab an extra layer of directories when you copied your world, right? the level.dat is at the same relative position below the saves directory as all the other worlds?
Well, I do not know whether I am using the old launcher or the new one. I run the Minecraft.exe I have on my laptop and the launcher window opens. I know my version of the game itself is up-to-date and should be the same between both computers. How might I be able to find out what launcher I'm using? And yes, I see worldX and worldY, being the worlds that I had made on my laptop, but I do not see worldZ where Z is the world I'm attempting to transfer in the client's world list. I see worlds x, y and z on the disk, though. Also yes, I put the world's folder right into the 'saves' folder, so it isn't residing in any folder further in than that. It sits with all the other world saves and the 'last modified' date corresponds to when I copied it over.
Although, the downloaded Minecraft.exe I have on my laptop is a much older download than on the desktop computer.
To clarify, not an older version--But, an older download. I just downloaded Minecraft onto the Desktop computer within the last few months, in fact.
You're definitely using the old/current launcher. I'm actually having a similar problem, in that I loaded up today's snapshot through the new launcher and my Snapshot Test World refuses to display. It won't even display in MCEdit's world list, although I can load the world directly from the level.dat. The annoying part is the new launcher has a console, but it gives me no information on why it won't display the world. It definitely can see it - When I make a new world with the same name, it adds the "-" for when there is already a world with the name.
We probably have similar problems, so although I can't provide a solution, I'll be watching here for a solution. It's frustrating that the files appear to be in order but the game has some problem which disallows us from playing on it.
Edit: Actually, my world also had some MCEditing done to it beforehand. But I simply opened my game on today's snapshot and the world was no longer displaying. Didn't work when loading last weeks snapshot either, so not sure if that really means anything.
Well, at least we will both be having our problems resolved once we figure this out, then. I can't find the world on MCEdit on my laptop, either. It seems to me to be a compatibility issue that arose somewhere along the line. Since we have both used MCEdit on the worlds we are attempting to load, maybe that has something to do with it? I'm going to make a copy of the world's folder here on my laptop and then delete the ##MCEDIT.TEMP## file in one of the copies, see if that helps anything
Edit: Nope. Nothing. Still no world on the world's list.
Can you still see the world if you open it through MCEdit 0.1.7.1 with the level.dat itself? That works for me, but it won't show me the world normally elsewhere. I've tried doing Repair Chunks, saving the world after changes, seeing if MCEdit might accidentally fix whatever went wrong, but nope, that isn't the solution.
Would anyone happen to know the reasons why the game could see a save folder, check though it, and decide not to display? Would there be specific files missing, or specific data requires. Something which could be manually applied to test?
Edit: I just system restored the folder back a few times, and even previously functional versions of the world aren't displaying. I've restored it to before the last world I have was last used, which means back when the world should work, but it never displays. I've loaded up as far back as 1.5.2 without any luck. I found an old topic on what cosmetically seems to be the same problem, but their solution of changing the player locations and spawn point didn't work.
Check the contents of the save folder, also make sure that it has NO weird chars (@,#<=>%^&*()/|\ etc). the normal contents of my world's save folder is:
DIM1 (Folder)
DIM-1 (Folder)
data (Folder)
players (Folder)
reigion (Folder)
session.lock (File)
level.dat_mcr (File)
level.dat_old (File)
level.dat (File)
Do you have all of these things? Or do you have something like:
1 (Folder)
2 (Folder)
3 (Folder)
And so on...
Or:
a (Folder)
b (Folder)
c (Folder)
etc
If you do you have a VERY old save and it needs to be converted, which 1.5 can't do. Websites can do that for you.
quark is identifying one reason why a save won't display in MC. That's if the save format is in a format that is not understandable to the current version of MC.
I have those files and folders. The files can't be corrupt, because I System Restored the save folder to a time when I know I could still use it and it would not run.
I renamed the .minecraft folder and let the new launcher redownload. I moved the save into this new folder and tested. The world works when I load through that. I haven't reset this folder in 2 years, so it is full of files. What file could prevent the game from loading a specific world? Because a clean install lets it work. I would rather not reset this folder as it has layers of files I'd like to keep. At the very least, if I've changed any keybinds without noticing, or any general settings...
Are you SURE you are using the right saves folder? Because the new launcher lets you keep them somewhere other than where they normally go. If you use your 'non working' setup and create a new world, you see it on disk next to the world that doesn't show up?
I found no weird characters in the name of the world. The world is not very old and I've played it with Minecraft version 1.5.2 before. It is up to date. I also created a new world and it did, in fact, appear in the 'saves' folder with the other worlds and the world that won't show up in client. However, I did notice something very interesting upon inspecting files found within the first layer of that world's save folder. Although the save folder itself indicates that it's date modified was the 17th of June (The date when I copied it onto my portable hard drive), the files within the folder itself indicate that they were created AFTER they were modified. For instance, the level.dat says that it was modified on May 31st of this year, but created on June 17th. It's possible that I grabbed the wrong folder somehow from the other desktop computer and have been mistaking a world showing up in-client as an old world, rather than the one I grabbed. This world I am having difficulties has gone corrupt several times in the past and I have renewed it by replacing the level.dat, level.dat_old, level.dat_mcr and session.lock files in it as instructed by a thread on this forum. However, that changes the name of the world to that of the newly created one and the previous, corrupt world is listed as the seed. I'm going to remove the world save folder temporarily, run the client and then see if any of the worlds listed have disappeared.
Edit: In the past, when the world had gone corrupt I replaced those files *from a newly created world* that is.
That it did. A world disappeared (Which indicates it was played last on the 31st of May). When I removed it and then it was listed once again when I moved the folder back into the 'saves' folder. I don't know where the error arose in choosing the wrong world, however. For the world on the Desktop computer goes by the name of 'Tohmor' with 'Elomia Fix' as the seed, where this world goes by the name of 'Fix World' with 'Elomia Fix' as the seed. Time for more experimentation!
I also don't understand why there is the ##MCEDIT.TEMP## Is in that world's save folder. Tohmor was the only one I've edited and that level.dat file was edited after the 31st of May and on the Desktop computer. I didn't even have MCEdit on my laptop when I transferred it originally to the desktop--There is no reason that the ##MCEDIT.TEMP## should be there if it is the wrong world.
darkner11, try moving your .minecraft folder elsewhere and letting the launcher redownload the folder, then copy the save into the saves folder. If you can see the world again, we have the same problem: Some setting file got ticked with whatever setting won't let it show that specific world. In which case, the solution is either starting over the folder (which I'd rather not sort through the original to find what I need and left in it) or... someone who'd know what file could cause this coming forward, because I'm not versed in the inner mechanics to understand.
Can you open the world with MCEdit? also I suggest using NTBExplorer (here) to check that all the level.dat entries make sense. if the world name/Player inventory is different than the ones listed in players/playername.dat and in .minecraft/stats/playername you have a problem.Copying level.dat s isn't a very good thing to do, it has erased my worlds, killed the player, wiped my inventory, reset XP, restored world to original seed... Lots of bad things.
I know MCEdit's World List also won't display the world, but it can load the level.dat file directly fine. Some setting from another file in .minecraft is saying "This world is invalid" or simply not to load it, and that's what's screwing it up for me. I want to see if it's similar for darkner. Sounds like this could be universal.
I appreciate all the suggestions and support! I found the solution to the problem quite simple, though I still don't know exactly what caused the world save of Tohmor to revert to an older version upon transferring. The world save folder had old contents mixed in with new, as if when I attempted transferring the folder from the desktop to my laptop, I made an error and indicated that I did not wish to copy certain files from the most recent version of the world on the desktop. That would explain why the ##MCEDIT.TEMP## folder was in the world save, but the world still showed up as it's older version. Since there was no folder of that type in the world save folder of the old version, then Windows would not have asked me if I wished to Copy and Replace, etc. I fixed it by simply copying the world again from the desktop to my portable hard drive and then moving it from there onto my laptop. As to your issue Mega Science: I wonder if you world has simply gone corrupt? I've known that to lead to absent worlds on the world list. Otherwise, you may be right that the world showing up does not have to do with the save folder itself.
