Can you post the workaround so that others can benefit from this thread? I have this issue and redownloading the client has not worked. This is an issue across three computers, on two networks, and on both Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.8.3.
The latest Dev Launcher chooses the version indirectly via a "Profile"
Use the Profile Tab to either Add a new profile for the version you want, or to edit the Default profile to select the version you want.

The old launcher no longer automatically updates the game.
I have been effectively shut out of all server activity..... please fix the launcher or provide a WORKING means of manually updating my game.
