I have been having this problem with Minecraft since Release 1.0.
I have the game drop FPS like mad. At first the frequency is not too bad, once every 5 minutes, but after a couple of times it drops to once every 10 seconds then to once every time I move. Turning the settings full down and downloading optifine didn't seem to help. Dropping the render distance doesn't do anything but buy me time.
The FPS drops to 0, like a mini freeze, then the game resumes as normal, with increasing frequency. The odd thing about it is that it completely stops freezing at the Main Menu, but the freeze continues if I pause the game pressing escape, to the point where pushing buttons like Exit is a timing puzzle.
I have left the game running for as long as I could but it doesn't seem to crash or freeze completely, only stutter in the most annoying way possible.
What could be wrong? I have a 2.7GhZ CPU, 4GB RAM, 512MB videocard (Don't think this matters) and more than 60% free hard drive space. I have no overheating issues and I can run far more memory intensive games with no problem.
The ingame graph goes mad with red lines up to the top of the screen when this happens, dunno what that means.
