I am currently having problems figuring out how to join multiplayer servers not on LAN. A friend of mine has a server set up and I would like to play on it but I can't figure out how. I realize this is a moronic post.
1. Run Minecraft
2. At the title screen, select Multiplayer
3. Click either Direct Connect or Add Server.
If you chose Direct Connect,
This option allows you to connect to a multiplayer server, but will not keep it on the list you see. Enter the server address, or in this case your friend's external IP address. Then click Join Server.
If you chose Add Server,
This option allows you to keep a server on your multiplayer list. This is somewhat a way to "favourite" a particular server. You can put anything you want for Server Name. Server Address would be your friend's external IP or the server's IP address. The hide address option will hide the server IP from being shown when on the "Play Multiplayer" screen. Click Done and the server will show itself on the list. Double click it to join.

I have tried to use the external IP, I had him go to whatismyip.org and give me the IP it gave to him and it always says connection timed out.
Thanks for the reply and help.
I have this problem too with my server. in fact, if I try just looking up my server with the add server option, it says it cannot reach it. i'm running a server using Ubuntu server 13.04 and people can connect to it IF they are on MY LAN, but NO ONE can connect to it outside of my LAN. idk if it's a bug with the server but i've got my router configured the same as it was before 1.5 and I used to be able to connect to my server even from the free wifi at mcdonalds.

Mine will do the same; however, I am running just your basic 64 bit Windows 7 with a 64 bit Java installation.
Is the router portforwarded? If not use hamachi https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/
limit is 5 person per network on free subscription though
Would you specify your router model?
my ports are already forwarded for the server and everything, it's all as it was before the 1.5 release. that's why i'm thinking it could be a bug in the server program.

i'm almost wondering if it's got something to do with the servers being set to offline mode. I know that just tells the server not to go through minecraft.net, I have friends who arent's premium so my server is set to offline mode=true. purhaps theres a coding error or a new code preventing actual net play on a server in offline mode now.

so I desided to check my router tonight to see if maybe my server issue was something to do with port forwarding (even though i'd checked it frequently, you never know), and found out to my astonishment two things...
(1)my routers IP (the one showing outside the LAN) had changed, gonna see if that's the issue but i'm sure it changed only recently.
(2)my router is NOT showing my server anywhere in it's active/inactive PC's section, you know the diag screen that shows what PC's or tv boxes that have been connected before and are either connected still or inactive. well it's showing in none of them and all I can tell you guys is it's a telus supplied modem/router with a model number of: V1000H
idk if not showing the server in the active inactive section is just because Ubuntu server isen't capable of talking to the router that way, but I just want to know if it's not an issue.

i'm gonna say it was my router's IP changing. god I hate it when ISP's change IP's like that. for those who are having similar problems, check to see if your router's IP changed.
