The current problem is that the game runs for about 2-5 min with lag and then suddenly freezes. I cannot exit out or close the game normally; I have to use the task manager to get minecraft to shut down. So far i have tried playing without HD texture packs and have even completely reinstalled the game.

I have never had problems before this. No lag, no freezing, nothing. It has worked perfectly since I bought the game in February. I have been using HD textures for about 2 months now without issue. It started just yesterday. I play on windows 7.

If that doesn't work, try rolling back your Nvidia video driver. Nvidia released a driver update in March that screwed up my java install on a laptop using Win8 and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 660M. After much trial and error, rolling back that update and reinstalling java solved the problem.

That the nVidia card is rendering Minecraft, instead of the Intel card.
Right click on the desktop, select nVidia control panel. Click on Manage 3D settings, then make sure the preferred graphics processor is set to high-performance nVidia processor.
