You open a world, click "start LAN world" or use the command /publish. The world will diplay in the multiplayer menu. Make sure you're connected to the same internet connection. You can play without a connection by creating your own network in control panel/network and sharing center.

we are on the same router, but it doesn't seem to work. it says in the chat "local game hosted on xxxx" the x represents random numbers. how do i get my friends to join that world?
Use Hamachi or the same router as the other player(s) and click Open to LAN. It will show up in their multiplayer, but if it doesn't you can give them the IP Minecraft announces in the chat

My friend types the IP announced in the chat into the Direct contact area, but it says connection refused.
I am on my laptop which is connected to the internet through wifi, and my friend is on a computer hooked up to the internet through a network cable. Are we unable to connect to a LAN world because of that?
