I'm experiencing a strange sound panning issue in Minecraft - If I point my crosshair right at the source of any sound (a jukebox for example) it gets really quiet, but when I'm not looking at the source - it seems ok. The thing is when you look around during a normal game experience this issue really disorients you.
I run Minecraft on a Windows 7 OS on an amd64 machine with an ATI 5990 videocard an Creative SB4 sound card. I checked the sound in different desktop applications - it pans alright. Other games have normal sound as well.
I also tried using JRE 7u21 and JRE8 (1.8.0-ea) so it seems to be localized to MC.
And ofcourse everything is done with the freshly downloaded MC files.
Ok, thanks for the reply, but unfortunately this solution did not work - I manually updated LWJGL as per the provided instructions and rolled back to JRE 7u21, but still the issue persists.
Tried both - still no use. But I noticed a funny thing - when I captured the video (Fraps) of this issue for you guys to see, and then played it back - the problem was not present in the recording! Also the overall sound level in game is significantly lower than in the video (which might also be a part of the issue).
Frankly this is something beyond me because it looks like a mixer issue, but I just don't know how it works on Java and inside LWJGL.
Ok, I tried almost every combinateon of JRE/MC/LWJGL and it the light of the recent video evidence, it seems that Java somehow misconfigures the W7 mixer setting to use a 5.1 setup.
Anyway after manually setting the default playback device to 2.0 (Stereo) mode after installing java, the issue went away.
Conclusion: I was not smart enough to look into this at once so I wasted a couple of days, but I hope this thread might help someone in the future.

A big thanks to mr. Tedster for the effort!
