I have had the same problem but i fixed it.
This is how you fix it.
1. Right click your minecraft icon and click properties.
2. Something should come up and at the top of it there will be some tabs.
3. There will be a tab saying compatibility, click that tab.
4. There should then be something saying "compatibility mode for" with a box next to it.
5. Tick that box by clicking on it.
6. There should be a rectangle below it, click that rectangle and then choose which computer you are using.
7. It may not say windows 7 on it so if it doesn't click windows 2000.
8. You should then be able to update minecraft again and if you can't you will just have to download the jar file and install it in. Look at a tutorial on how install the jar file.
I don't have compatibility.
