I have no idea what's wrong. I have a gaming PC and recently downloaded minecraft onto it, which I had previously been running on a much worse computer. None of my other games run this slowly or poorly. Minecraft looks great and runs well at the beginning until i am suddenly hit with the lowest FPS I have ever experienced in my gaming history.

If your OS is 64-bit, then it's recommended you use Java 64-bit. Grab it from http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and see if performance improves.
