I'm not sure if this is where i post this but for about a week now i haven't been able to play my multiplayer servers because it says 'Client out of date' I read somewhere that this is because a new update is needed but i have no idea how to update my game. Please help!
ok i just created a server for me and my friends using white list and stuff. i've never gone into the server before, and im localhost. it gives me the same client out of date thing. so its impossible for me to have a different update than the host because i am the host
If it helps, i used these instructions:
maybe cuz the vid is 1.7.2 and i got 1.7.4 but iunno
You have to be running a compatible version of minecraft. You control what version of minecraft you are using by configuring it in the "Profile" that you use. You should probably use different profiles for different purposes, and use different game directories as well so that you don't accidentally open one of your saves with the wrong version of minecraft and cause problems due to incompatibilities between versions.

MC should have asked you if you wanted to update.
Your most likely problem is that you said "yes" but the servers have not yet updated. (They often wait because they need to wait for mods to update)

Of course it is possible. The launcher lets you run any version you want. The server is one particular version. They must match.
