It really depends on the OS/graphics card.
If it runs a 32-bit OS then there's reason not to upgrade the RAM to 8GB.
If it's 64-bit, I'd upgrade to 6GB of RAM or something.
Which version of the i5 is it and what graphics card is it?

This will be good if you use optifine and optimize the settings. You shouldn't need more than 2 GB of RAM for minecraft considering the vanilla client uses less than 512 MB and increasing that will do almost virtually nothing.
