Ok, so for a while I've had this issue where not only will I not receive update news at the launcher, but I cannot access any multiplayer server. I'm also assuming the fact that my avatar skin won't change is also involved somehow. But both the launcher and server error messages have the line "java.net.SocketException: Address family not supported by protocol family: connect," so I'm assuming there's a connection. Also, I had recently extracted a .minecraft file for the purpose of creating a texture pack, but I've since deleted the copy I used.

Anybody know how to fix this?

sometimes this is caused by the malware called "Relevant Knowledge". If you see it under your Add/Remove Programs, then get rid of it.

I've been having the same problem today! I just got rid of that "Relevant Knowledge" and it really helped!! Thanks alot!
