Find out if you have a quad core or dual core processor and also check the graphics card. GeForce 600s should work. I think that I have an intel hd graphics and 8gb of ram along with a 2.5ghz dual core i5 and get 30 fps
try allocating more ram to minecraft i don't think mac OS gives enough ram by default but i might be wrong
RAM affects your performance very minimally. The only time it would improve performance is if you run out of it. I'm pretty sure that Macs allocate enough for Minecraft.
OP: You didn't say anything about your graphics card, and if you have a CPU that's strong enough (which you do) and a disk that's fast enough (which you should) it ultimately comes down to your graphics card. If you're using HD 4000, which is likely, you shouldn't expect good performance.
