What's in the top box? When the top isn't smeltable it won't work.
I put wood planks in the top box too, in order to make charcoal for torches.
In other words, I was trying to burn wood planks into charcoal with other wood planks. Just to clarify that this is not quite a noob mistake, I put planks in the bottom box and planks in the top box too.

Uhm, hate to say this, but it is a noob mistake. You burn LOGS not planks into charcoal...

Uhm, hate to say this, but it is a noob mistake. You burn LOGS not planks into charcoal...
