I have tried countless times to allocate more memory to Java on every machine I've had since I began playing Minecraft, though all attempts have been unsuccessful according to Minecraft's F3 menu. It always says 461MB of memory is allocated, regardless of what I set the runtime parameters to in Java.
I would like to allocate more memory to Java because, since my first save long, long ago, I have been getting 'Out of memory' errors. I get solid FPS upon loading a world, but eventually after several minutes of gameplay things start to slow down, and Minecraft presents to me that error.
Current specs:
8.00 GB ram
Windows 8 (64-bit)
Intel Core i5 @ 3.00GHz
(Those were all I could find)
1) I strongly suggest you give Minecraft less RAM than default (512mb).
2) The reason you're experiencing the out of memory problems is that you're using 32-bit Java. Its Garbage Collector can't keep up with the amount of RAM it needs to free so you therefore experience the freezes and out of memory errors.
3) Uninstall 32-bit Java and install 64-bit Java. Unless you are using extreme amounts of TNT etc, you will not need to allocate more RAM than the launcher does.
Please quote me when replying.
I should've mentioned this, but I do have 64-bit Java.
Still, if you have 32-bit Java as well (I have both) then Minecraft will most likely be using it - so uninstall it.
I have uninstalled 32 bit, and I've made sure that there's only one line in the runtime environment settings. Also, another thing I forgot to mention: the out of memory error often occurs when I take a screenshot.
Weird.
It seems that the Out of Memory bug has migrated for you.
Try launching Minecraft with the Magic Launcher. It allocates half of what Minecraft normally gets and can help resolve the issues you're experiencing.
Why have I not heard of this?
Anyways, it works. Thank you very much.
