Hi there
I last played Minecraft in November last year, and I remember it running pretty fine, crashing only sporadically (I call that fine for a Java game). However, I just reinstalled it, and now it's consistently crashing within the first few minutes of loading a world (or creating a new one).
When I spawn, I appear to be stuck in the ground and can't move anywhere, and I have to mine the block below me to fix that. When the game finally crashes, most of the time my computer crashes along with it (but no BSOD), only like 1 out of 3 times i can wait a minute and I'm dropped back to the desktop with a popup saying my graphics driver had to be recovered from an unexpected error.
The weird thing is, I haven't changed anything about my computer in the last months, other than upgrading from Win7 to Win8, and before you jump on that, the even weirder thing is when I boot from the old harddrive with Win7 installed, the same thing happens.
System Specs:
Win8 x64 Pro
Intel Q9550 E0 @4GHz (tried it at factory clock, same thing)
4x2GB Mushkin PC2-8500
PoV GTX-570 Beast

I already had the graphics driver updated since i suspected that might be the issue, but no. So I updated my Java (i was only like 6 or 7 minor revisions behind) and played for 3 hours straight. But I think it must have been a fluke, because today I'm back to the game crashing my computer withing 2-5 minutes.

Hey there!
I think I've solved the problem. My graphics card was factory-overclocked, and it would appear that the OC was stable enough for games like BF3 and Skyrim, but Minecraft with it's cutting-edge graphics just pushed it too hard
In fact I had to slightly underclock it even below the usual factory settings, but now I've been playing for a good hour without an issue (god I hope this isn't just a fluke and it'll crash as soon as I finish writing up this post).
Anyway, thanks for trying to help, and I hope this information will help someone experiencing similar problems in the future.
