Apologies in advance if I am mistaken on something.
I haven't been on minecraft for a while (1.3.2), and tried it a couple of days ago. Since then I had upgraded my graphics card to an AMD Radeon HD 7770 1GB. My processor is the same thing it was from when I had bought my computer (A6- 3650). Back then when I had played, I got roughly 60+ fps (even before non-integrated GPU). Even on tekkit, I had gotten decent fps. Now, when I play regular minecraft, I get roughly 28 fps. Is it something that they updated in the new versions? I had not yet taken the time to read all the change logs of the video settings and so on. The settings I have am currently using are :
Graphics - Fancy
Smooth Lighting - Maximum
3D Anaglyph - Off
GUI Scale - Normal
Particles - All
Render Distance - Far
Performace - Max FPS
View Bobbing - On
Advanced OpenGL - Off
Clouds - On
Use VSync - Off
Except for the new smooth lighting settings, everything is the same as it was before, with the exception of the lower fps. Plus, when I press f3, the Used Memory is around 12-25% (~190MB of 910MB). The allocated memory is 55% of 504MB.
You should install Optifine if you don't already. Optifine is a really cool mod that you can use that boosts up your FPS. I use it, and in Single Player, I get probably 50+ FPS, and my computer sucks (just saying).
But other than that, if you do have Optifine installed, then you should probably put down your settings a bit.
I use very horrible settings, tiny render distance, fast graphics, no bobbing, and so on, so that I get very good FPS. Putting these settings doesn't really bother me, but if it does for you, then I recommend not doing it if you don't want to.

That's all the help I can do for you though. xD
Happy posting!
Thanks for the help. I've used Optifine before but I guess I haven't tried it in the past 2 months. Any idea how to make minecraft use more of my GPU? I've heard that minecraft is CPU and RAM dependent, and I've also heard that people with a good GPU get 250+ fps with a decent processor.

Please post your DxDiag log for a rundown of your full system specs. Also, RAM has nothing to do with how the game will perform FPS-wise.
