About a month ago, just before Minecraft 1.5 was released, the scroll speed in my Minecraft suddenly sped up to amazing speeds. It is now so fast that it is very very hard to select a block using the scroll wheel.
I know I can use 1-9 on the keyboard. Please don't respond saying I can, I am looking for a fix, not a workaround.
I have changed the following settings to try to resolve my problem:
As you can see from those images, I have a Microsoft mouse, and it is a Microsoft Comfort Mouse 4500. After changing these settings, scrolling in a browser, and every other non-Minecraft game works very slowly, it is only Minecraft that is not affected by the changes. It also is affected in BOTH vanilla and modded Minecraft.
If you have any ideas of ways to help, please tell me below, I'd like to be able to select items from my inventory reliably again, it used to be the only way I'd select items.
In the minecraft options menue there is an option to increase/decrease mouse sensitivity. Have you tried adjusting that, and does it have any effect on the scrolling? I use a laptop trackpad, and I know that increasing the pointer sensitivity made the game more likely to think my movements were scrolling attempts. Perhapse the reverse will work for your issue?

I just tried that, and sadly, no it does not help.
Hm... I think perhapse there was a patch update that 'fixed' the speed of the scroll wheel and it's function in picking blocks. In the movement section, there's an option to change that. It should say "Pick block: mouse button 3" or something like that. Try temporarily setting it to a different key stroke, going into the game, then going back into your options menue and setting it mack to mouse button 3, and see if that changes the block-picking speed.
On your mouse wheel; is it the kind that clicks a little bit as you scroll with it, or is it a smooth motion? If it does click, does one click = one move along the item hot bar? If so, perhapse you could try and alter your movements to fitt the new speed, though that probably counts as a work around; I'm pretty sure that's the only kind of solution you're going to find at this point, unless you want to get into modding to solve this.
I actually am a modder, but I don't really want to go THAT far, but I suppose I may have to. It is the smooth motion type, btw. Also, it USED to work, but all of a sudden it changed. I'm not sure what I changed on my computer to do that, or if it was a java update or something, but I know it just changed one day.
or if it was a java update or something, but I know it just changed one day.
And I believe there was a recent change to the MC client that affected the pickblock keystrokes. I do not remember when or what it was, exactly, because I use a mousepad+the number keys.
Modding's looking to be your best bet, if you are unwiling to try a work around.
I have a similar Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center. Even turning off any kind of scrolling does not affect the scrolling in minecraft. This is definitely a Minecraft issue.
This may be a minecraft issue, but there is something more to it.
This happens because the smooth mouses such as the Microsoft Wireless 5000's wheel sends many more 'clicks' per 'finger swipes'. this could be resolved if there was an option that would let the user specify how many 'mini clicks' would represent a slot switch in minecraft's control menu.
Another possible solution is if minecaft would support horizontal scrolling, which I think would be the most handy, since you scroll horizontally in minecraft visually already.
Well, I found something that very much explains this: http://techietalkz.com/2011/04/10/how-to-workaround-for-microsoft-wireless-mouse-5000-scroll-wheel-issue/
"Most (almost all) mouse drivers cause mouse wheel events with a "delta" of ±120. This is an arbitrary value that has been chosen by Microsoft in the past to allow finer control.
Since then, several programs use that value directly to test whether the mouse has been scrolled down or up (delta / 120 == 1 -> down, delta / 120 == -1 -> up, or something like that).
However, the Intellipoint software causes mouse wheel events with smaller "delta" value (the expected finer grain control), and programs which use the 120 value that way just fail to register the wheel movement, because in integral values, 30 / 120 = 0…"
With the Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000 for example, the delta is not 120, but 30. This means that the mouse is four times as sensitive as regular mouses that we are used to.
Now the question is, how to change the delta? Good luck..
I have found a different slightly less easy but still easy way to quick select in minecraft. I use X-mouse program and I change wheel up and down to disable and I change tilt left and tilt right to scroll up and down and I change the repeat tilt rate under settings to 1 instead of 100.
This way u can push the mouse wheel to the left and right to scroll up and down through the items and it does it at a decent rate and when u r on the internet u can simply hold it to scroll. I didn't even know the mouse wheel had left and right buttons until today.. lol
HALLALUJA I FOUND A SOLOLUTION!!!! (for me anyway)
I had a similar problem with my scroll working perfectly fine and then BAM!, Flash Gordon scrolling. I would have to exit, restart, and resume my map for the scroll to work...for a short while. After scouring google and my control panel I found in Control Panel a checkbox for "Smooth Scrolling" and unchecked it. THIS WORKED! I instantly had normal control over my mouse. Not sure what it would be or where on a Mac, but now you have a phrase to google-search. =8-D Yay!
Hope this helps you as much as it did me.

Curse PremiumSuppose you will.
Yes, I got that from your original post, thank you.
