Can anyone help my son out here? We've tried updating Java today (which the update installed fine) but when we go to start a Minecraft game, it says building terrain, and then.........nothing. For about 30 seconds. Then it says Java 7U21 is unresponsive and asks if I want to quit the Java program. Regardless of what I select (or even if I select nothing and click nothing) it then goes to a Minecraft screen that says I'm out of memory.
Does anyone know what is wrong? This is frustrating. We paid the $26.95 for the game but we aren't able to use it. My computer runs a Pentium 4 at 3.0GHz and has 2.0GB of RAM. (minimum requirements according to Minecraft)

Thanks!!
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Java (64-Bit and 32-Bit)? Once you have done that try again and reply here saying what happened.

Thanks for the reply!! For the 32 or 64, how can I tell which one I have? And which one do I want?
EDIT: It looks like I have the 32 bit version of Windows XP, and I deleted all versions of Java and re-downloaded the latest version, but I didn't see any options for 32 or 64 on that download.
After that download, I don't get the Java message anymore. However, I still get the "Out of Memory" message. I did the notepad fix (Minecraft.bat) but that doesn't work either. I still get the "Out of Memory" message.
Did minecraft ever work on this computer? Or did it always do this? Or only since the Java update?
If it never worked, you might want to try updating your video driver from the manufacturers website (intel.com, amd.com, nvidia.com depending) since bugs in the drivers can cause this symptom.
Some people have memory issues if their world is corrupted in certain ways, you could try a new world if this could be your problem.
If you determine that it is the world, then there are ways to try to recover it.
Minecraft never worked. We tried the demo about a week ago, but we thought the demo was the cause of the problem. So we paid for the download, and it doesn't work still. My Java is 32 bit, and according to what I've found online to check my operating system, it appears it is 32 bit as well (It doesn't have 64x next to Windows XP).
After deleting the other versions of Java, I got the Java problem notice to go away, but it still says out of memory. Here's exactly how it goes:
When we log in and select a world (there are a couple of different ones), it says loading terrain. Then the words go away and you see the "cobble" looking background. About 30 seconds later, a grey screen pops up that says out of memory, etc etc. and that I can go back to the main menu or quit the game.
However, when I use the Magic Launcher, it lets me move around for about 15 seconds before the screen just disappears.

THANK YOU 1000X!!! Nailed it!! Got it working. My son will be sooooo glad when he gets home from school. Thanks!!!
