We have updated Java - I'll see if there any any more updates though just to doubly check.
As for Windows 8 - minecraft was working beautifully for about a month before this happened - we have no mods installed although my son does has a lot of texture packs. We are thinking of removing all the texture packs to see if this helps.
This is a new laptop so memory and RAM should not be an issue.
We also have FTB (now removed) and this had the same problem which is why I uninstalled it.
Both were very 'laggy' before the crash - and thankyou so much for the youtube tutorial on how to fix a bad video card Yosugo
This seems to be common in windows 8 if your using 64 bit java uninstall 64 and try 32 bit assuming you have 64bit java
or if that dosent work try the solution on Mojangs web site
" If the connection fails, and HTML code is displayed in the news panel, or the news panel has a black background, it may indicate that Java 7 is having trouble using the IPv6 format to communicate with minecraft.net. If this is the case, you'll need to tell Java 7 to prefer to use IPv4 instead of IPv6. Right-click on minecraft.exe and select "Create shortcut". Rename the shortcut to something else, such as "Minecraft with IPv4". Right-click on the shortcut and select properties. In the Target field, replace the text with: java -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=false -jar minecraft.exe If the shortcut cannot find the location of java, try the following location: "%ProgramFiles%\Java\jre7\bin\java" -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=false -jar minecraft.exe If the shortcut still does not help, it may be because you do not have the correct version of Java for your machine. Make sure you have 64-bit java if you have a 64-bit operating system.
This error can also be caused by a computer's internet settings, a firewall blocking access to the service, or a special character (!, ñ, ö, etc) in a Windows username. If you have a special character in your computer's username, you will need to create a different username without that character."
thats interesting that 64 bit Java does not play nice with Win 8. another reason to not buy a Win 8 PC.

We log in, get past the mojang screen... then..... black screen of death! Nothing, zip, nada.
We have tried rebooting, removing the software etc then downloading and reinstalling with no luck.
We need help.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks for any help
