Your specs are very similar to mine except that my video card is an entire generation older than yours and I generally pull around 19-22 fps without optifine. I use MCPatcher now, optifine just had too many weird bugs lately, one right after the other so I "simplified" things by getting rid of it. I run a 64 bit texture pack, zombe's mod pack (only for the fly mod), TooManyItems, and Rei's minimap and usually get by with only the occasional lag spike.
2GB of ram just isn't enough though, two problems, first is that Java is greedy and wants more than that to create the "virtual machine" to run Minecraft in. The newer java updates wont run so you will be stuck like me running an obsolete version that is known to have compromised security features. The second problem is that since this most recent update I literally run out of memory after 30 minutes or so of game play, lag spikes increase and start to turn into lag freezes until I finally have to log out.
The hard drive activity light on my computer then stays busy non-stop for about the next six minutes as everything gets written to disc and saved properly, it kinda bites. I'm planning on ordering two new 2GB memory sticks at the end of the week so that I finally have 4GB of memory installed and can solve these two issues (about $46.00). Before you change over you really should increase your RAM if it is at all possible so that you can start with everything up to date right off the bat.
Best of luck, I know you'll like the PC version especially with all the customization you can do to it if you want to.
Also Optifine helps to smooth out your frame rate and CPU load but only if you have a single core processor running 32 bit windows or a dual core processor running 64 bit windows. You and I both have dual core processors running 32 bit windows and Optifine does nothing for us in the way of frame rate or CPU optimization, the creator says so in the documentation. So basically it does nothing except for letting us run texture packs higher than 16 bit, well MCPatcher does that with a much smaller and less intrusive program that hasn't had all the bugs that Optifine has had lately.
Just a heads up because a lot of people are probably going to tell you that you should be running Optifine, you shouldn't because the biggest part of what it is supposed to do wont even work for you!

Thanks so much, I have a laptop as well, do you think you can help me with those specs?
thanks guys, here is my laptop. please help me! Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83GHz Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition Service Pack 2 (build 6002), 32-bit 3.1 GB RAM Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family Graphics Card 107 GB Hard Drive Free Space
Should i use deskop or laptop? thanks! can i run mods?
Woah! Your laptop is WAY better then your desktop. That could go about up to 20-30 fps. With optifine it could go probably up to 50 fps. But its windows vista :/ it will still work fine. Just don't push it with the mods.
COPY AND PASTE TIME OK so I alredy answered pretty much the same queston not 5 mins ago
first off everyone should know this Use Optifine for gods shake jesus you can fix so many lag probs OK now get Optifine here Once you've installed the mod *it's really easy* next update LWJGL at this page on the wiki since your using a dual core use multi chunk loading NOTE you can only do this with optifine installed next make everything fast then change the settings every computer is different so you may want to edit every setting to a balance *where minecraft is fast and looks like how you want it to* and also DO NOT Use Frame Caps in Optifine/Unmodded use max FPS and turn off Vsync Also if your computer is single core use smooth chunk loading and lazy chunk loading as well as smooth FPS *and I forgot the last setting for single core*

You could run it. Just, don't expect it to be as smooth as you're used to on Xbox. Install Optifine Light or Smooth Version. You'll find installation instructions on the page. Hope this helps!
