Im trying to connect to a server my friend created, but when i enter the server name and ip and click enter, it seems to search, but it only says its scanning for games on my local network. I dont know what that means, and the person whose server im trying to connect to lives pretty far away from me. and after it scans, it says that i cant reach server and my connection bars have a red x over them. When i click join server, it scans and then gives me this message "java.net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect". I dont know what to do. Someone please come to my aid hear, i bought this game to play with my friend and i really really need to get this to work.
thank you.

Do you have a cracked version? I've seen a lot of youtube videos recently of like 'free Minecraft', ect. And it shows in the video when they click "multiplayer", it scans for a LOCAL wifi network.

no, i have the legitimate one. bought a card and redeemed it through the official website. And is there a limit to the distance away a server is to which i can connect? i really want to figure this out so i can play with my friend..... i bought her the game and i cant even play with her now.... is it possible that she messed something up when she made the server?
This is very odd try backing up your worlds and removing .minecraft I'm not sure why it's doing this and no there is no limit at all you could join a server in china and be fine *with crappy internet probs cuz your internet is trying to connect to china LOL* My friend could join my server all the way from Arizona

Minecraft is awesome but the more powerful god is not Notch it's the creator of valve
(I use Hamachi) Well what I did was, go the folder where he has everything like the world and server properties. Then copy the world file. Then go to minecraft.net and down-load the server 1.6.4 (or your current version), After that delete everything in your old server like the server properties file. Then put the MC server that you just down-loaded into a file or somewhere, where you'll find it again. Start the server up wait for all the files to load. After copy the old server world file, into the new one. It should come up with an alert like replace this file's destination. Click on that one. Stop your server then start it again. It should work.

You should always stop your server before doing any work on it
