Hello,
I recently bought the game and when i tried to force update it to the current version(1.5.1) the updates seems to be very slow - about 2-3 kbps or even 0 kbps - so it never actually completes the update.
I checked my antivirus (kaspersky) and my firewall settings all seem to be fine.
My internet speed:
Could it be a problem in their servers?..or is there anything else I should try?
4.33Mb/s is about 500KB/s and if your ISP is throttling Mojang's servers then your speed are going to be very low. If I was you I'd disable Kaspersky for a little while and try again to make sure it's not the AV that's causing the problem.
Mojang uses s3, I doubt they would throttle amazon.
Thanks for the replies guys.
I tried one last time before I went to sleep - it downloaded at about 3-4 kbps max and occasional <1 kbps x.x .. it took about 30-40 min..but did the job and got my 1.5.1 client.
But because of these speeds I'm worried that it might affect my MP experience.
Welcome to the Forum.
It might be a problem with Mojang's servers - I'll try Force Updating.
Meh, it's downloading at a normal speed.
Got the latest version of Java?
Thanks.
Yes i check that also.. I am running the latest version.

hmm.. I didn't totally disable AV but kept an eye on the application and network monitor... and everything seemed to be fine.. now i'll try disabling and updating it as you said.
Sorry for double post - I just wanted to mention a few things i tried out:
I tried download the mac version and updating the client and - i got the same results.. i.e <1 to 3 kbps download speeds.
Also i downloaded the Minecraft Tekkit client and while updating/downloading - it also frequently says "Failed to donwload" or it takes really long time and never actually completes...
I also tried donwloading the minecraft.jar directly from http://assets.minecraft.net/1_2_5/minecraft.jar for various versions and even in browser dowloads it took very long so I had to use other tools like IDM to get it dowloaded..
Maybe my ISP is throttling the minecraft download website (s3.amazon)?.. is there any other way to get around this?.. x.x....
If your ISP was throttling downloading of Minecraft then you could always use a proxy - but then multiplayer would be slow.
Well, the original MC client managed to pull through the ultra slow speeds but the technic(tekkit) was a bit a problem.I had to look at the log each time to get the download link from the respective websites and had to download using an external tool(IDM).
Can you suggest some free proxies that I can use only when updating or something?

May I ask how long this has been going on for?
