Ever since Minecraft updated to 1.5 I have been getting horrible latency (5+ second lag at a minimum), and it's getting out of hand. Using the in game server list it show that I have at least 3000 ping. I experience lag for about 2 minutes when joining a server, moving a few chunks through the world, or teleporting, so basically whenever I move. There are times when an area is loaded up, such as my base, where I get minimal lag, about 100 ping, which is still more than what I usually had before the update. This does not occur in single player, I have tried every video setting configuration known to man, and it does not help. I've allowed Java and Minecraft through my firewall, turned off my firewall, but nothing helps.
If it helps, I'm running an Acer Aspire with 8gb of RAM, i5 2.5 GHz processor, and unfortunately Intel Integrated HD 3000, but that never affected my game performance. I'm getting a steady 72 mbps connection.

Retired StaffTry reinstalling Minecraft. Make sure to save your saves folder. Do you have both 32 and 64 bit java installed? If so, uninstall the 32bit.
