You installed Ubuntu to replace Windows 2000!!!
That could mean you don't have a strong enough computer.
Give me your PC specifications please,or try to delete your minecraft.jar file in the .minecraft>bin folder...

I'd be saying certain things about you but i would get a infraction. He's asking why it isn't working, not you should use ubuntu or anything.
@OP, It looks to me like you have a very, very very old computer (it says 989MB maximum RAM) which means Minecraft probably won't be able to run (?), you could try to upgrade your drivers. (I didn't read the full thing, just skimmed it).
If the error says it failed to start the game, then you are right.Get a new PC.When you installed Ubuntu you didnt fix the problem on crashing on Windows 2000-Minecraft was made in 2009 and just doesn't support old OS.
I can run it on Windows XP, that was made in 2001...
XP and 2000 are very diffirent software.XP was made in 2001 but minecraft runs in Service Pack 2,which was relesed later.
The reason that 2000 cant run minecrfat is that it is a DOS software, unlike today windows.
