There has been a lot of talk of how to make Minecraft work on a MAC with OS 10.8.
Most including edits in the terminal or dropping back to Java 6
Is there going to be a release of Minecraft that works with Java 7 on the MAC OS10.8 without reprograming or downgrade. Other apps I have need Java 7 and I it is a pain to switch back and forth, plus I can't get Minecrat to work no matter what I try anyways.
What is the word from Mojang on a clean working Mac Java 7 version?
I have been on Minecraft since the PE and xbox releases and would love to use it on my MAC!!
I wouldn't be surprised if Mojang managed to fix this, but you should never expect a Mac to be good for any game. Sometimes the game updates and breaks the compatibility, sometimes Mac updates and breaks the compatibility, and even if the game does work, because of Mac's software it is often unstable.
I have been using both mac and PCs for 20 years and with macs using intel chips and apple handing over java to oracle, there are few reasons why compatibility should be an issue. They just have to want it work. Oracle is in control of both Java 7 for PC and mac so...
Games being written for PCs and not macs is purely a case of economics, not stability, more people have PCs then macs ( I have 2 of each) because they are cheap. I am a programmer writing for both pc and mac and macs are much more stable then PCs. Windows is becoming more like mac, not the other way around.
Back a million years ago when Medal of Honor first came out, I played it on both mac and PC, the mac version was MUCH better, both is game play, graphics, crashes, so on and so on..
The question still stands, is Mojang planning an update for MAC 10.8 Java 7?
I've heard different from other programmers on this forum, and there's also Mac's performance difference. One thing I meant about Mac's incompatibility is that they mess around so much with things like Java that should be left alone, as in this case. If Mac don't fix it then Mojang probably will do something about it from what I've seen them do in the past.
True enough, apple does sometimes have an issue with over engineering things - like java.
With apple handing mac java 7 over to oracle maybe a "simple" fix is coming down the pipe soon... ??!!

I have over 40 games on steam for mac, and rarely have compatibility, stability, or performance issues.
Even two Macbook Pros, or two identical PCs, that were both built in the same year will behave differently with various things.
I hang around the Recent Updates and Discussion section of this forum quite a bit, and I often try to help anyone with a technical problem (E.g., the game keeps crashing, the game won't start, etc). About 60 - 80% of the time the problem is that the user has a Mac of some sort. On a bigger scale, a lot of game devs run away from Macs as fast as they can, because it (from what I've heard) it is VERY hard to optimize performance on a Mac and keep it compatible, especially as Macs have no support for the (rather brilliant) Directx.
Now that macs are becoming more popular, games are being made more and more compatible with OSX. I haven't had problems myself, but I do agree that I've seen more mac related gaming problems than windows related ones.
Although problems are more common with macs, the source of the problem might not be the macs themselves (I'm not completely denying that macs are the problem, but we can't be sure.) To get more accurate results, research needs to be done on gaming using other operating systems (linux, haiku, etc.) The problem could be that games have always been developed for windows, and porting is adding a second barrier of bugs.
I do a bit of game development for mac in objective-C, although it's extremely simple (I'm learning.) Applications created in objective-C on xcode are extremely stable on iOS and OSX, but that's because xcode is specifically for developing for these operating systems. If games made from xcode were ported to windows, the bugs might be just as common as in mac games.
I think that it is a little related to that, but, a post by someone who codes (It would take me years to find it now ) mentioned, along with other things (some of which I have mentioned), that Macs are a HUGE pain to try to code a game for, especially when trying to optimize the code. The reason that most games are ported to Mac from Windows is, not just because windows is more popular, but also because Windows is far more suitable for gaming. Again, this is because of Windows letting Java do as it likes, which is what a popular code needs to be able to do, Windows uses Directx, which hugely optimizes performance, Windows is easier to optimize, etc, etc.

Yes, apple probably should quit messing with java
