I was looking to download a copy of the map for the Mindcrack server, and found an old one from 2011. When I select it at the single player world screen, it says the world needs to be converted, and says "converting world". However, it hangs on that message and never loads said world. Why is that occurring?
If the world is from 2011, it needs to be converted to the newer "Anvil" world system. As for the freezing, make sure there's not any mods in the world that might be corrupting it.

I don't use any mods for my Minecraft. I'm unaware if the world I'm trying to play uses any, but I highly doubt it as it was a pure vanilla server. What would be another reason for it freezing and not converting it?

Well, perhaps your system is just really slow to convert worlds. You could also try the basic make-sure-Java-is-updated thing.
Try just entering the world, then leave Minecraft up for a while to see what happens. Just completely forget it's there, then check back after a while.

Is there a way for me to go into creative in this world, or am I stuck with survival?

Alright, thanks.
