When 1.5 first came out I had around 60 FPS and now 1.5.1 gives me 1-4 FPS. I tried downgrading to 1.5 again but ever since the 1.5.1 release its just as laggy.
The choppyness from 1.5 is gone when I updated to 1.5.1, and my constant 60fps, of which is my screen refresh rate has returned, with maximum smooth lighting.
i noticed that too i have less fps in 1.5.1 then i had in 1.5 i now have with maximum lighting and fancy graphics in a single player survival word 30 - 60 fps???? before in 1.5 with same stuff i had 60 - 90 fps and even in a creative single player flat world i get only 140 fps and my computer is decent
I just deleted the whole minecraft folder and know it seems to work. Not as good as the 1.5 but its playable... I hope there will be another update soon :/

Im not sure, but i think it has something to do with the new lighting engine. If so, they should probably take it out, finish it, then put it back in..
This is what I wrote a few days ago (above)! @doofus98_12
Learn your facts, please. The new lighting engine is barely implemented. The 'Minimal' Smooth Lighting option is the old lighting engine/smooth lighting. The 'Maximum' option is the new one. 1.5 included a new rendering engine; 1.5.1 included the OLD rendering engine because of lag issues that Jens took note of. There's absolutely nothing else in this update that could cause this problem, so you'd best check for other problems.

Specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 955
12 GB DDR3 1333 RAM
Nvidia Geforce 660ti 3GB
Samsung 830 128GB SSD
Benchmarks ->
1.4.7 Smooth Lighting Off -> 200-250 FPS
1.4.7 Smooth Lighting On -> 100-130 FPS
1.5 Smooth Lighting Off -> 70-90 FPS
1.5 Smooth Lighting Minimal -> 40-50 FPS (very choppy)
1.5 Smooth Lighting Maximum -> 20-40 FPS (very choppy)
1.5.1 Smooth Lighting Off -> 30-40 FPS (very choppy)
1.5.1 Smooth Lighting Minimum -> 20-25 FPS (very choppy)
1.5.1 Smooth Lighting Maximum -> 10-18 FPS (very choppy)
Can we please just go back to 1.4.7? 1.5 ruined smooth lighting, now it's completely unenjoyable even with smooth lighting off.

Retired StaffI have a GTX560, i5-2500k, and 16GB RAM, and I get ~200FPS with smooth lighting at maximum. I've seen it spike to more than 300FPS.
