I know how to force update. When I force update, it downloads the files but then just stops for good at certain spots. It usually stops after completing the META-INF. When I deleted my .minecraft and got all the files back, it did the same thing as force update: stop trying to download at random spots. And when I downloaded the .jar for 1.5 from another website, it instantly crashes minecraft like before. Same with any other version.
