I updated my minecraft to 1.5 to check it out and when I tried to go back to 1.4.6 to use the server it will not let me. seriously I replaced the entire .minecraft folder with my 1.4.6 backup and when I login it just goes and updates it 1.5 without the force update button engaged or asking if I want to update. If I can't go back to 1.4.6 I'll be unable to play on the server until they update it and that could be weeks.
any ideas where the update info is stored?

If you failed to backup and/or restore 1.4.6 properly, then if the launcher fails to find a valid installation it will of course update to the latest release as would be expected.

You can also use the Technic Launcher and launch the vanilla "modpack". It's pretty much just vanilla minecraft and you can set which version you'd like to use in the setttings.
