Black screen after "Done Loading"

Black screen after "Done Loading", and when I go to /brent/.minecraft there is only one folder (/bin) and one file (lastlogin).

I select 'force update', it downloads and looks like it's installing but never does.

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and get the same behaviour with OpenJDK6, 7, and SunJava 7. Also, my LWJGL is up to date.

Any ideas what I can fiddle with?
