I just got the 1.5 update. I logged in and downloaded it not knowing that the multiplayer servers I play on, did not update yet! I really want to play on them but I need to downgrade to 1.4.7 first. So I wanted to ask, how do I do this? I have a Mac by the way. Thanks!
Go on to minecraft.net and download the minecraft.jar there. Just plop that into your bin (In Application support, then Minecraft) and it will downgrade.

Hey I had the same thing. I'm not sure why this happens but I think you need to somehow get the 1.4.7 file online, then drag it to your bin after you've removed the 1.5 file. I just don't know where to get that 1.4.7 file :/ If anyone knows where to get one, could you PLEASE tell me! It would be very helpful! I wanna get back on that server ASAP

Hey thanks for the vid but when I get to the bin (which I am at right now) what do I do? I removed the 1.5 file and now what? When I log into MC it just stops loading. Could you please tell me what to do?
If python opens a window just close it. Now type in the number of the version you want to downgrade to.
(Versions go down to Indev)
Type the number before 1.4.7.
It will say it's downloading the jars and all. Now when it's finished and it says [ Process Completed ] Close the window, Start up minecraft and play on the servers.
Now If you want to take the jar out.. Go to /user/Library/Application Support/minecraft/bin/ And drag the minecraft.jar out anywhere.. If you didn't know the minecraft.jar is the core of the game and has all It's components, Items, Blocks, Tools and everything inside that one jar file. And there you go

There ya go. Directly from assets.minecraft.net, so it is completely legal.
I fixed the link. Put it in the Minecraft bin folder.
