I apologize in advance if there is a similar thread somewhere on here but I've been looking for a couple of hours trying to find a similar situation and couldn't.
My friend is having a weird issue with connecting to my server. My server is running on a dedicated computer and running 1.5 Pre-release. Two of my friends can connect to the server via internet but just one of my friend is not able to connect via Internet. I can connect to my own server through my LAN and can connect via internet as well.
I have a Asus RT-N56U router with port 25565 forwarded to the server's computer. Like I said, I have two other friends that can connect to the server fine. In my server properties, I have whitelist set to false and online mode set to false as well. I should also mention that he has no problem connecting to other servers, just mine When he is on the server list in Minecraft, my server just shows a red X over the signal strength bars and says "Can't reach server" Thinking he continually typed my IP address wrong, I remote accessed his computer to double check and sure enough, he had the right IP. Thinking he might have firewall issues, I completely disabled Windows firewall, that still did not work. I checked on his router/modem (He has those awesome router/modem combo's from Time Warner, Motorola) he has 25565 forwarded for whatever reason but ok, I disabled the firewall on the router as well as Windows for a brief moment to see if it would connect yet still not connecting.
I've tried running my server on a different port (25575) and forwarded my ports to match and that did not help either. I've restarted my servers computer, routers modem, his computer, router/modem and this problem still persists. I'm really out of ideas on what could be wrong. He still can connect to other servers fine, just not mine. Any input would be awesome and if you need additional information, please by all means ask. I would appreciate any help on this issue
Does he just simply get "Cannot reach server"?
Let your friend ping your server and check if he gets a respond
Yes, He just gets the "Cannot reach server" and trying to connect anyways results in a "Connection timed out:connect" message. I have tried to ping through cmd on his computer and that just results in a "Request timed out"
Making things more frustrating is the fact that we were able to play just fine a while ago but there was a few months that we didn't play and when we went back to play several days ago, we get this current problem. No hardware has changed since then so I'm extremely baffled at this problem
Did your friend installed any program that might changed his connection in any way?
The only thing he has done since then was installed Windows 8. He doesn't have any programs that would redirect his traffic elsewhere (proxy servers, etc.)
I just got whitelisted on a server yesterday, but could not access it for the same reason. A red X was over the lag bar with a red 1.5 next to it. I had never had this happen before, and I could still play on all my other servers. This is not a Windows 8 problem as I am running OS X.
What I believe was happening was that the server had been updated to 1.5, and I was still on 1.4.7. I downloaded the the minecraft.jar and it seems to work. Though I cannot connect to my other servers now without replacing minecraft.jar with the old snapshot. You can get all the snapshots on http://mojang.com/.
i have been having a some-what similar problem for the LONGEST time.
A looong while ago me and my friend (Let's call him "Friend 1"?) started a tekkit server (on my comp) and started playing... took some effort involving ram and some odd connectivity issues (the same ones we have today, i believe). Eventually, through a computer restart, i got it to work. Then we got bored of tekkit and decided to play some old-school vanilla. So, i booted up my old vanilla server, and WHAZZAM! "could not reach server".
Eventually (God knows how, i guess more restarts) i got the vanilla server to work and me and friend 1 played for a while. Then we got bored, played tekkit yadayadaha... but the server wouldn't work again. And now, i'm in one of those awkward, 3-month periods of no connection to vanilla. IMO, Tekkit servers are little parasites that squeeze their way into your vanilla server and kill it from the inside. But that's just me.
So... Uh... Yeah! Anyone want to make this the only place on the internet that carries the solution to this problem?
By the way,
Yes port forwarded
No, can not connect via direct connect
3 different friends have all tried and none connect (unless in those periods of time when we can connect, again not that time right now)
everything that needs to be done is done.
P.S. These go to the person that posts the solution.
I'm somewhat glad to see that this isn't just a isolated issue with me. I still have tried getting him to be able to connect, flushing his DNS for giggles. Wasn't expecting it to work but worth a try since I'm drawing blanks
Updated to the official release of 1.5 and still the same issue. This is really annoying. I setup my router's built in DDNS function to see if that would help and it did not.

Yes, he can connect to other servers just fine. He does not have antivirus on his computer.
I should have also mentioned that his IP and character is not on a banned list on my server
