I have a pretty powerful computer (3570k, 7950, SSD) and when I used to run a 256x pack on 1.4, I could run at over 120 fps easily, but with the snapshots and 1.5 prerelease, I can run the default at ~120, but when I use a larger pack, like this http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1712998-minecraft-15-defaultex-texture-pack-new-default/ I drop to about 5 fps. Do you have any advise?
I'm having this same issue. I tried tweaking all video settings to lowest levels and still couldn't get much framerate. I could get around 100fps before and now i am lucky to get 16 with hd texture pack. No problems at all with default pack but I really like my hd packs. Even 64x pack was annoyingly slow 30-40fps.
• Get the latest MCPatcher for 1.5
• Get OptiFine for 1.5 (optional)
• Add OptiFine as patch
• Move it to the 2nd position
• Uncheck all patches, except "Extended HD"
• Patch
My framerate after doing that (without installing optifine) started at 70 and went as high as 180. higher than before with the default texture pack! Some others had luck with that too. Hope this helps guys.
