Hello guys, I am new to Minecraft. Though I am already deeply in love. I have came to the forums for various reason though my main concern, is that I seem to have very intense lag spikes at random moments....
I have a Asus laptop, specs:
nvidia geforce gtx 660m - 2gb
intel core i7 processor 2.3ghz
16 gb of ram and I am running 64 bit w7
Anyone else with a decent computer having random lag issues?
I am playing on Single Player as well. I haven't got that far into the game to dl mod's,maps, and figure out how multiplayer works out.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
-Thanks ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ |||||||||||| EDIT : I have fixed my issue by uninstalling 32 bit java, and re-installing with 64 bit java. I I hope thisworks for anyone else having the same issues! Thanks again for every ones help. I have currently be running for over two 1/2 hours with not one "lag spike" or dramatic loss of frames per second. I honestly HIGHLY recommend this to anyone having the same issue.
I assume by "lag spikes" you mean a drop in frames per second. This is very normal for minecraft. This most often occurs when you're exploring parts of the wolrd you haven't been to before. This is because the game is literally writing the terrain as you explore it. Pressing escape which will pause the game in ssp will allow the game to do this faster if it's happening at an inconvenient time. Another common cause of this is if you're near a Jungle. Because a jungle biome has many vines that are not fully grown they will all grow at the same time slowing down your system performance.
There can be other causes such as redstone circuts and excessive amounts of mobs. At any rate, the best way to deal with these fps drops is to adjust your settings according to the way the game is running. if you're in already explored terrain and the game is running well, you can leave the settings on high. But if you find the game slowing down from, for example, a jungle nearby, you can lower the render distance, turn fancy lighting off and set the graphics to fast.
One good way to alleviate this issue is to get Optifine. And then tweak the options until they are just right for you. And allocating more memory to Minecraft.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
I have a much lower rig than yours and I don't have that much lag. I sometimes have lag spikes. I just turn down my render distance and some of my settings. And yes that helps.
Thank you all for responding! Much appreciated I will tweak with some settings and hopefully all is solved there. It is never unbearable, just certain times if I am going back down into my mining areas or exploring outward from my little shelter. Which sounds like what you guys were explaining above, just tweak settings!
If the lag spikes happen when generating worlds you could make a RAM disk to make them load faster.
Tutorial: He says its for Win 7 but Im pretty sure it also works with 8 this is an old video.
Guys I happened to noticed something at the bottom of the "video options" menu. In red, it was recommending a 64 bit Java installation as I currently have 32, which is weird how I goofed that as I am running 64 bit os.
If further problems persist I will go back to previous methods and check out new tutorial
Edit: Installing 64 bit Java seems to be running a lot smoother.

Do the following:
Under options, turn AdvancedOpenGL off, turn Particles down to Minimal, turn your Graphics to Fast, and change your render distance down to Normal. I also recommend installing Optifine, a mod that is designed to decrease lag.
Hope this helps, and welcome to the MC community!

I too seem to have random lag spikes, where my fps drops to near 0 on many occasions. Though I don't know of a permeant remedy for this problem, I suggest closing all other running programs and use a cleaner to get rid of any files that are wasting space.
For my Mac, I use CleanMyMac. Saved myself almost 18 GB of space.

Hey there friend, I seemed to fixed my issue by simply uninstalling my 32 bit java and reinstalling 64 bit java.
I am running windows 7 64 bit.
I am pretty ignorant with Mac so I wont make any other suggestions! Hope It works for you as well and anyone else viewing this thread!
