If Minecraft gives me the chance to crash from any server menu, I'll call that lucky.
Here's what happens: I'll add a server, instant crash. I'll direct connect, instant crash. I'll start a single-player world and Open it to LAN over Hamachi and then... well, that's worked a couple of times but mostly, it crashes.
I've read the "helpful list" thread and the "Crash Fixes" thread - no result. I've done searches for similar problems, but it seems like anyone else experiencing connection crashes at least gets a heads up from the client. Not so with me; therefore, most searched topics have proven irrelevant.
I've uninstalled/reinstalled Java 3 times in each conceivable configuration: 32-bit, 64-bit, 32 & 64 combo and I've done the same for Minecraft, including deleting the AppData files and force-updating each time. Added Java, Hamachi and Minecraft to the exceptions list in both Windows Firewall and Avast, and have tried running Minecraft with both of those things turned off afterwards. Deleted/reinstalled graphics drivers; nothing. Used the memory allocation fix and then used the shortcut memory allocation fix; nada. Uninstalled/reinstalled ethernet and/or wirless adapter drivers; nooooooope.
Nothing works.
I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting to mention a few things attempted during the last two days I've spent in trying to get this thing to function as it's supposed to, but I'm currently too livid to focus on what they might have been.
So. Can anyone out there help me feel not like a knob for having spent $27 on this game? Or is Minecraft just not going to ever work on this computer?

get both 32 and 64 bit installed
Definitely already did that. No good.
Get rid of this proxy that is messing up your networking stack. Or configure it so that it doesn't get used for minecraft related stuff.
