Can't dig, chop trees

I am new to Minecraft, so I might be missing something obvious. I installed it on a Dell notebook, and it seems to work at first glance - I can move around and jump for example - but I can't dig in the ground, chop trees, etc. I can hold LMB as long as I want, with no effects. Notebook has 4GB RAM, 64-bit Windows 7 and 64-bit Java 7 JRE.

No such issues on my desktop - also 64-bit Windows 7.

Any advice?

You might be in adventure mode. Do this command to revert back to Survival mode.

/gamemode 0
