I can't find the minecraft.jar file/foler anywhere on my PC which is wierd as I have the .bin one. I need this as I'm trying to dowload my 1st mod, can anyone help?
If you're on Windows 7, go to Start, type in run, hit enter.
On the Run box, type in 'appdata' and submit.
Go to Roaming. Go to .minecraft.
Open up .bin and there is the minecraft.jar. Open it with 7zip, WinRAR, or any similar program.
To augment this answer (although it is 100% correct)
The reason "Find" doesn't work is that folder, by default is hidden. so only if you setup folder option to show hidden folders would it show up in windows search.
On Windows 7 or XP, you need to type '%APPDATA%' without the quotes in the run box and it will bring up the roaming directory and you should see your .minecraft directory in it.
Edit: I'm pretty sure this works regardless of whether it is "hidden".

open I did this but still no .jar & after I open .minecraft file my bin doesn't have a . before it, it just looks like a regular folder & I'll list you the contents. It also doesn't give me the option of opening with, just have to double click it and I have winRaR on my desktop. Please help, I'm desperate to create a Mod but can't get past this issue. Contents of bin are: natives (File folder)
Aether-Texture-Pack-146 (WinRaR Zip archive)
Herobrine-Texture-pack-UPDATED-142...(WinRaR Zip archive)
jinput(WinRaR archive)
lwjgl(WinRaR archive)
lwjgl-util(WinRar archive)
md5s(File)
minecraft(WinRaR archive)
version(File)
But no really, the Minecraft (WinRaR archive) is it! You have your WinRaR program set to read ".Jar" files. which is why it it showing up as a winrar archive rather than a java file.
But yes, that is the Minecraft.jar file you are looking for. The "Minecraft (WinRaR archive)"
If you want to change this to not open with WinRar,
Right click the Minecraft Rar file, go to Open With, Select Default Program, and select the Java™ Platform SE binary.
On the Run box, type in 'appdata' and submit.
