Advanced OpenGL, for me actually decreases performance... a lot. This happens on Linux, but on Windows it improves performance. What exactly does this option do? On my Linux install, I have my video card driver working and Oracle Java 7 is my only version of Java. Also, I manually updated LWJGL to the latest stable version. I had to do that for Minecraft to even run on my Linux install.

I'm honestly surprised how many people get a Radeon card. It's not exactly that they are bad, their support is just always a little behind the curve when compared to Nvidia so you really need to know what your doing to tweek them to resolve issues. I don't know how many new game betas and launches I've been in where people with Radeon cards had a lot of issues. Nvidia works more closely with developers. Not that Nvidia never has problems, they just work more smoothly out of the box usually.
some drivers implement the occlusion query support in software, which is of course the low performance way of doing it, and which is why Advanced Open GL is an option.
