I have a private server on my home network. My son and I noticed that a couple of portions of the world suddenly reverted back to their original look. We had built a road between our main area and an npc village several hundred blocks away. While tooling around our main area, we noticed that the road suddenly stopped and the area immediately after it looked to have been reverted.
When we created this world, we had copied over our main area to a newly constructed map (I forget which versions were involved). This was done almost a year ago. We've since upgraded the server to run with newer versions. We haven't been playing much this past year, but over the past few months we've been playing a lot more, which is when we built the road. Now the point at which the road stops, is about where the cutoff point of where our copy/paste of our main area was done. As I follow where the road was going, I see portions of the road appearing untouched, but then another area appears to have been reverted. The sizes of these "reverted" areas are not large, maybe a few dozen blocks, and then for 10 blocks the area contains our work, and then another few dozen blocks are reverted. Since these areas are just along the road, I'm unable to determine how wide the areas are just their "length".
The only thing of note that happened error wise with the world is that on one occasion when I went through the End Portal, I fell through the world. It kicked me from the world, and whenver I joined I'd be stuck falling through the world. I had to restart the world on the server in order get fixed.
Overall the damage was insignificant, as all of our major builds appeared untouched, just seconds of the road (to include two simple bridges).
Has anyone else experienced a world reverting on them before?
I don't do backups, but even if I had, reverting to an old saved world would have lost me more than what the road will take to rebuild.
Minecraft generates in Chunks. Sometimes, these chunks can become corrupted, and the game will re-load/re-create them to stop the whole world from becoming corrupted. This can happen in any world, But it mainly happens when switching between minecraft versions, using MC-Edit, or installing mods.
There is no way for you to retrieve the lost part of the road without building it again, or importing it from
MC-Edit.

yeah, this just happened to me,on the biggest house i've ever built,my farms, mines, and other crap is still there, but everything in that specific area of my house is just gone
You might open the world in MCedit (while the server is off of course) and use the 'repair regions' function to hopefully stabilize things.
I hope you're using the stop command in the server console to turn it off when shutting it down or restarting it. Just closing the process while running can cause world corruption which will cause chunks to go bad and regenerate. With backups it would be possible to use MCedit to just copy a chunk from your backup and import it into your world to repair serious losses.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
