I'm having the same problem running OSX 10.8.2 and 1.4.7 crashing often for no apparent reason. I deleted the bin and resources files but that didn't resolve the issue. Any help will be greatly appreciated

After installing new apple Java update, upgrading RAM allocation, following lots of advice and going in circles, it still didn't work. I trashed the app, re-installed. Resetting the controls to default seems to be the key to sorting it out, as 2 controls were set to use the same buttons ... lets hope it stays working
Thanks for advice and help ... very appreciated
Now the 7 year old can hi-jack my laptop happily again

One known reason is having your Chat command bound to a mouse button, this is fixed only the latest snapshot. See https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-3409
Another reason can also be having one key bound to multiple different commands.
Whichever reason it is, you should try resetting your key mappings to the defaults.
