All of these data was when I was not using Optifine and installed no other mods so it's all vanilla.
The first time I played Minecraft on my new computer during the 1.7.3's, I could play Fancy - Normal on 50~fps but through the versions, Minecraft became more sluggish. During the Official Minecraft Release times, I could play Fancy but only on Short. Now, 1.4.7, I can only play Fast - Short. Has Minecraft been sluggish through the versions or have my computer just became slower due to usage?
It might help if you could tell us your system specs..
Personally, minecraft just all-in-all is a laggy game because it has to update chunks as you move around.. but I'm running a 4 year old obsolete system with 4 Gbs of DDR2 RAM and I only experience occasional lag. I close my client and restart it and that solves the problem.

Well, I'm only playing on a laptop so the specs are quite low.
CPU: AMD Athlon II P320 Dual Core Processor 2.10GHz
GPU: ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4250
RAM: 2GB (1.75GB)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
