I know you have to hold down the left mouse click button.
I started a LAN survival world and at one point I switched it to creative, when I switched it back i couldn't destroy anything unless it was a 1 hit block or i was using a tool.
If webrosc's idea doesn't work, try visiting the Nether, try to break a block there, then return back to the normal world. When my game acts up like that, going to the slightly glitchy Nether makes the normal part of the game work better.Curse word! Never mind

you may have gone into adventure mode by mistake

Moderator0 is survival, 1 is creative, 2 is adventure (i think)
