After running minecraft for a few minutes (anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes), my computer completely shuts down. No warning, no nothing. Just immediate power down as if I had unplugged the power cord.
Now, normally, I would immediately think this is an issue with hardware or software, but I have not had any issues with my computer for months. This did not start until I decided to play minecraft again. I have tried to completely re-install the launcher. I even re-installed Java to no avail (which is 1.7.0_15). I even kept an eye on my memory usage to see if there was a leak before the shutdown and did not see anything overtly strange. Also, I always ensure Minecraft is given 8gb of memory (I have 32gb, so why not).
The restarting occurs with or without mods. I've set down and watched my system temps and have noticed a few things. While idle, and only using the pc for random stuff, my CPU temps remain between 35-39C. If I play another game (i.e. Dead Space, Skyrim, StarCraft 2, etc etc), my CPU temp will increase to between 40-45C. Now, if I play Minecraft (with or without mods), my CPU temp will rapidly increase above 60C until my system shuts down to protect itself. Also, I have noticed this exact same trend with from the NorthBridge on the motherboard with temps rapidly spiking above 60C. The moment I shut off Minecraft, temps immediately return to normal.
I honestly have no clue what is causing this issue and hope someone out there will be able to help me fix this.
Hard Drives
233GB Maxtor 6L250S0 ATA Device (SATA): 34 °C
1397GB Western Digital WDC WD15EARS-00Z5B1 ATA Device (SATA): 31 °C
298GB Seagate ST3320620AS ATA Device (SATA): 35 °C
GPU stays at 36 °C constantly. Have the stock cooler on the CPU within a Cooler Master HAF case. It has a 120 fan at the front bottom and rear and a 240 on the top. I think the front and top are intakes with the rear being the exhaust. The power supply is a 1200w Thermaltake that exhausts out the bottom of the case.
What is weird is this just started occuring today. Was playing Minecraft just fine even with the FTB Mod Pack from Direwolf20 without issues. Have no clue why it just started with this.
Will attempt your suggestion and will get back with you.
EDIT:
Quick question. Looking over AMD Overdrive, I don't see a Turbo function. Mind telling me which tab and what to actually set? I don't overclock so don't know much about the Overdrive program.
Sorry I never replied to this topic. I forgot about it. I did what you suggested and it worked for a while. Now, when I try to play, the motherboard's north bridge is overheating. I installed a temperature sensor system with probes at the cpu and north bridge. The cpu temp is staying steady at around 65C when running MC (which is still a little high for my processor) but the north bridge jumps to over 70C fast and continues rising.
Any other suggestions?
EDIT:
There is still no overheating when playing anything else, including Bioshock Infinite.
